ANIMAL ADVOCACY
After working in classrooms and zoos for 10 years, I had to answer the call of the wild. Moving across the world to Thailand immersed me a vibrant world of friendly people, spicy foods and incredible animals. Joining forces with some new friends, we created a Sanctuary and Home for elderly elephants who need extra attention and care. Now people can view these beautiful elephants from a safe and respectable distance, learn about elephant’s importance to the environment, and contribute to their life long care. At Sappraiwan, I was able to care for the elephants and bring local and international students into the jungle to learn first hand about Thailand’s ecosystem. And of course, we played some theatre games too!
Think that’s awesome? Check out this article I wrote comparing the elephants to characters in Shakespeare for my friends at Last Syllable Press.
I started my animal work as a zoo keeper in Florida, USA. That took me to Trindad and Suriname to work with Leatherback Seaturtles and eventually to Riverbanks Zoo, in Columbia SC, where I worked as an interpreter and educator for many years.
